Although the gospels present at least
three different settings for this incident, The Gospel of John provides the inspiration
for this panel.
Jesus arrived at Bethany, at the home of
Mary and Martha and Lazarus, where a supper was given in his honour. At this meal
Martha served, and Lazarus sat with Jesus, their guest.
While Martha works and Lazarus looks on in
dismay, Mary anoints Jesus' feet with a costly perfume and wipes them dry with her hair.
The writer of John's Gospel depicts this act
as a consecration of her master for his imminent death.
