| The Women at
the Foot of the Cross
This cluster of women, looking up at the
dying figure, are representative of the friends and family of Jesus who dared to gather at
Golgotha that day. While different Gospel writers report different names, it seems
clear that they were followers of Jesus from Galilee who had come to Jerusalem.
The courage and faith of the women is
contrasted with the depravity of the Roman soldiers
who, while waiting for Jesus to die, amuse themselves throwing dice. The winner
would claim the seamless garment Jesus had worn.
