It was Maundy Thursday evening, and Jesus
had gathered His disciples together in an upper room in Jerusalem where they would
celebrate the Feast of the Passover. Just before the meal was to begin, Jesus left
the table, and prepared to wash the feet of the disciples. Footwashing was common, a
courtesy extended to guests who had walked the dusty roads -- but it was the task of a
servant, not the master.
With sleeves rolled up, towel and pitcher
and earthen bowl to hand, Jesus approached Simon Peter. The fisherman was aghast!
It was only when Jesus insisted that Peter acquiesced. But there is a tender
touch of affection as the hand of the gruff out-spoken fisherman rests on the shoulder of
the kneeling Christ.
