Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
Later that evening, after dinner, Jesus
asked the disciples to accompany him to the Garden of Gethsemane where he wanted to pray.
Peter, James, and John were his companions.
This time in the Garden was stressful for
Jesus. It was a time for assessment and decision-making. It was a time of
struggle. The thorn branch is an ominous link with the pain of what was to come.
But Jesus was resolute. "Spare
Me, God ... let this cup pass ... yet, not my will, but yours, be done." In
contrast to such strength, we see the sleeping
disciples. Said Jesus, "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."
