The Chi Rho Cross Above the crucifixion scene, fashioned in red, in association with the red worn by the Christ figure, is a Chi Rho Cross. It is the oldest monogram known to have been used in reference to Christ. The Cross consists of two Greek letters. The letter "Chi" [C] is the first letter in the Greek word "Christos" meaning "Christ". The letter "Rho" [R] is the equivalent of the English "R" and is the second letter of "Christos". When combined we have the first two letters of "Christos", and at the same time, a stylized cross. [The Chi Rho Cross adorns the steeple of Christ Church.] |

The King of the Jews The Gospel of John says the words over Jesus' head were in Hebrew and Latin and Greek (John 19: 20-32) so that all who passed by could understand what happened to Jews who challenged Rome. Here we have the traditional acronym, INRI, representing the Latin words which may be translated "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". |

Jerusalem Golgotha, known as "the place of the skull" was a barren spot, perhaps the site of an unused quarry, outside the city wall. It was a despicable spot, so despicable that it had to be located outside the city wall. It was the place of crucifixion. The city of Jerusalem is visible beyond the base of the Cross. |
