Jesus Calms the Sea
In this panel, Jesus stands as an island of calm. The sea that surrounds the boat is still, while the waves hastily retreat across the lake in the distance. the storm launches one last flash of lightning before disappearing altogether. The gull moves gracefully through the air, its confidence in sharp contrast to the lack of faith of the disciples. Jesus demonstrates his absolute trust in God's providence by turning his back on the now powerless storm to comfort his disciples. They can only stare in amazement at this master who commands even the wind and the sea with authority.
Jesus comes to set us free from the most powerful bonds that enslave us: the doubts and fears in life that immobilize us. If the disciples, who went on to become the foundation of the church, had doubts and fears in the very presence of Jesus, then there is hope for others who only know him through the word.
