Jesus Calls the Disciples
From virtually the beginning of his ministry, Jesus was accompanied by a group of followers which tradition came to designate "the twelve disciples". The number twelve may be more symbolic (of the twelve tribes of Israel) than real.
In this panel, Jesus beckons with his right hand, while his left index finger points above, indicating that the things of the spirit are of greater significance than material pursuits. The two fishermen gaze up at him in silent admiration, just before they drop their nets to follow him. Like the others who were called to follow, they immediately abandoned what they were doing when they were called.
