A family -- perhaps the family portrayed in
the first scene -- is out in the wilderness, barren but for the manna which they are
gathering. The erect, almost upward-looking position of the fathers head indicates
his doubts about leaving Egypt have been resolved in favour of reliance on the providence
of Yahweh. In the distance we can see the oasis where the camp must be, and the water and
palm trees suggest that accommodations have improved greatly as well.
